Thanks! Problem solved.

Trying the manual approach didn't work (dselect said the contrib directory
didn't exist), but the soft links did work:

mkdir /install
ln -s /cdrom/Debian-1.1.8 /install/stable
ln -s /cdrom/Debian-1.1.8/contrib /install/contrib
