I suspect you haven't modified the ppp configuration files for it to run with diald. Some options needs to be removed from the ppp file so that it can run with diald. See the diald manpage. (Typically: modem, crtscts, defaultroute, and others...)
BTW this means that once you'll have set up ppp to work with diald, you won't be able to run it without it. Unless you use two different configuration files for use with and without diald.
