I think that there is a real problem; I'm getting the same thing here.
Debian 1.2; kernel 2.0.27
Adaptec AHA-2940
Conner CTM3200E-S QIC drive (3080/TR-3)
Both the drive and the SCSI card are brand new.
Last week's backup gave the following:

===================================
Notice the half-hour delay before the last timeout.
The system may error out any time during the backup process. Sometimes
it dies after a few megs; about one in five tries is successful (about a
gigabyte).
Another machine with a Buslogic BT-545S card (but otherwise identical)
gives flawless backups on this drive.
