Beautiful Backups

Hi,

Having recently had a scare where I thought I had lost my harddrive, I
have been motivated to investigate the possibility of purchasing a
backup device.

Two questions:
1.  What backup hardware should I buy? (I don't want to spend too
    much)
2.  What backup software should I use?
