I think you just answered that question yourself: the `xv' binary
you downloaded is ELF and the libX11.so.6 you have isn't.
I tripped over this myself a couple of weeks ago and ended up
downloading the `xv' source code from debian/non-free and but
compiling it on my Debian-0.93 setup as a.out (which it did with no
problems).
I still have the `.deb' file and I will be happy to upload it to
`ftp://ftp.rahul.net/pub/bhogan/' and let it sit there for a day or
two (not `forever' because it puts me over my gratis 5MB disk quota)
if you want to download it.
