I think the problem is that your drive doesn't support SCSI-II, which
has the standard command set for playing audio.

My somewhat later NEC drive works fine for me with Workman:

I think you need either to find some software specifically written for
your drive (there may be kernel mods involved), or to get the spec
from NEC yourself and use the SCSI generic driver.
