I was wondering this as well... is there some other level of package that will actually 
compile you a custom version of the software for your system?  This could work with
the kernel and other software that must have 'hardcoded' information included in the binary
(as a trivial example, MOOs have compile-time options that should be set... and are probably
different for every system... apache also has defaults that get set at compile-time... not 
as vital though because those defautls are overridable in config files.)

Solutions?  Ideas?
