Telnet: usernames bigger than 8 characters?

Hello,

is it possible that telnet strips the user name whenn logging into
another machine to 8 characters?

>plus:~# telnet minus
>Connected to minus.lfm.rwth-aachen.de.
>Escape character is '^]'.
>Debian Linux 1.1
>Copyright (C) 1993-1996 Debian Association, Inc. and others
>
>minus login: 1234567890
>Password:

>From the logfile:
>minus in.telnetd[12161]: connect from plus.lfm.RWTH-Aachen.DE
>minus login: 1 LOGIN FAILURE FROM plus.lfm.RWTH-Aachen.DE, 12345678

As you can see the logfile shows that the username is stripped to
12345678.

Thanks

Dirk
