How to stop lynx from checking mail

Good morning folks,

how do I stop lynx from checking mail on a per user basis?  I know
that I can set

	CHECKMAIL:FALSE

in the global configuration file /etc/lynx.cfg, but as the default is
TRUE I would like to configure this on a per-user basis, but neither

	CHECKMAIL:FALSE
nor
	checkmail=false

works in the ~/.lynxrc.
