What is the domainname?

According to the installation manual, if I want to install Linux on a
network I need to ask my sysadm for 

IP Address 
Netmask
Gateway Address 
Name Server Address

But then in the `Networking Configuration' section I am asked for the
domainname. Is the domainname one of 
IP Address 
Netmask
Gateway Address 
Name Server Address
or it is an extra info?
