Can't get to com 1

Hello,
I've recently got most of the debian 0.93 release running on a
spare partition (for now). One problem (for now):

I can't get to /dev/cua0, the serial port my microcom modem is
connected to. I get an error very similar to:

/dev/cua0: device or resource busy

Of course the result is the same with the root account.

This is an Acer 486 machine, the motherboard com ports turned off in
the bios. Com1 is a Siig serial port card, com2 a cheesy faxmodem
card. I've currently got Fall 95 yggdrasil running (1.2.13) with no
problems getting to the port.

On the chance the stock debian kernel was trying to accomodate a
serial mouse, I recompiled the kernel with just the ps2 mouse
included. Nope.

Finally the messages log gives:
Nov 16 22:19:09 xyppp39 kernel: tty00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
Nov 16 22:19:09 xyppp39 kernel: tty01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

but there *is* no /dev/tty00 or tty01 !? Hmmm.

Thanks for any help you might have.

nathan
