Re: 1.0 (Are diskettes worth it???)
Mark, having gone through the installation just recently, I would say having
the diskettes around are a good thing for safety reasons. If you upgrade to
Debian, are you sure your Slackware emergency boot diskettes are still
efficient? I've used the Debian boot diskette quite a few times the last few
days...
Just to mention a typical mishap: my usernames "orloff" and "root" all type the
same on US and French keyboards, but my passwords do depend on the keyboard
(numbers, a, w, z etc...). I use a french, but use it as US, so in the end I
got confused and couldn't retype my passwords. Now, without a boot diskette,
you're kind of cooked, ain't you? With the Debian boot/root pair, you can get
a shell, mount the HD, replace the /etc/passwd file, and there you go again...
Summary: I would never dream of having Linux installed without having boot
diskettes at my disposal!!!
