My pronouns were off.    It doesn't matter whether biff or xbiff are
running or if the comsat service is enabled.  When emacs calls the
script, I get that error.   When I call the script from the command
line or cron, it succeeds with no error. 

All the script does is:

    popclient -P ~/.mail-password $popserver
    inc $*

but with a check for hung processes.
