Oh.  Err, what do you see if you try one of the failing messages with
-v1000 switched on ?  (NB this will produce a *lot* of output.)  In
there somewhere will be Smail's idea of what it's passing to the
resolver.  You might also check for the presence of a qualify file on
the Sun.
