System Hangs and the Kernel

I installed 0.93R5 about a week and a half ago, as obtained from
ftp.debian.org. Several days ago I downloaded /debian/binary/base/*.deb (to
get the more recent dpkg package). The problem I am having is that several
times I have arrived in the morning to find the machine locked up with the
HD light lit. The reset button does not always work and a power down reset
is required to get the machine to boot. I have also had the experience that
'shutdown -r now' goes through all of its sequences through the shutdown
till it gets to rebooting... at which point things are hung again and a
power down reboot is required.

I have never had this experience with a Linux kernel before! My question is
this:

a: How do I tell what version of the Kernel I am running?
b: What version should I be running?
c: Should I install all the packages in /debian/binary/base? Will this bring
me up to a proper kernel version?

YHS, Dale
