Mientras te comento los pasos generales:
- comprobar que el aparato es detectado (doy por supuesto que sí, pues
imprimes): lsusb
Sí, detecta el equipo, pues imprime sin inconvenientes.
- instalar sane, sane-utils y xsane
Están instalados
- verificar si está en la bd de sane (ver /etc/sane.d/hotplug/libsane.db)
Sí, está.

- verificar si tiene reglas creadas (ver /etc/udev/libsane.rules)
Verificadas, están
- intentar detectarlo como scan: sane-find-scanner + scanimage -L
Detecta el mecanismo. No está en la tabla /etc/udev/libsane.rules, y por
ende, SANE no lo reconoce

Cuando falle alguno de los pasos (si no, pues mejor que mejor ;-)
configurar el firmware (/etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf) que suele ser un
fichero .bin de entre los drivers de windows.
En el disco hay un HPM1005.bin. Voy a estudiar el tema, pues no sé qué
debo hacer. Haré un exhaustivo STFW y mantendré informado.
Prueba todo eso y nos comentas lo que ocurre
