Dejaste iptables como " * " o como M en la compilacion ?? ahora... despues de instalar iptables recompilaste el kernel ?

asi compilo iptables
/usr/src/iptables-
1.3.5# make
KERNEL_DIR=/usr/src/linux-2.6.14 BIN_DIR=/bin
SBIN_DIR=/sbin
/usr/src/iptables-1.3.5# make
KERNEL_DIR=/usr/src/linux-2.6.14 BIN_DIR=/bin
SBIN_DIR=/sbin install
todo funciona bien pero iptables no funciona no lo
encuentra si le doy pro ejemplo
/usr/src/iptables-1.3.7/iptables -F olo que sea
saca este error

iptables v1.3.7: can't initialize iptables table
`filter': Table does not exist (do you need to
insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.
