MODEM 3COM US ROBOTICS 56 EXTERNO

No consigo hacer funcionar este modem en Catix (derivada de debian), el modem 
es detectado por el sistema en /dev/ttyS0 pero cuando intento conectar el 
modem me lanza:

y se quedo ahí parado todo el tiempo.

¿Alguna ayuda?

Me han dicho que pruebe con el comando "pon" pero no sé exactamente que tengo 
que hacer...
