Lo que yo hice fue bajarme el jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.bin de Sun, luego ejecute (como usuario comun):
fakeroot make-jpkg jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.bin
Nota: Para usar make-jpkg tienes que tener instalado: java-package - utility for building Java(TM) 2 related Debian packages
Una vez que hiciste esto, ejecutas como root, o con su o sudo:
dpkg -i sun-j2re1.5_1.5.0+update04_i386.deb
Y listo, no tienes que hacer nada mas, podras empezar a usar tu java en Mozilla-Firefox sin mas. Que hasta hacer esto a mi no me funcionaba.
En mozilla si funcionaba, pero lo habia instalado manualmente, y era una versión mas vieja, asi que no se si sera que usa los viejos links simbolicos o no. (Como tenia una versión mas vieja, y el paquete lo habia bajado de un repositorio alternativo, antes de instalar el nuevo java lo desinstale).
