hdc8 si no me equivoco es (hd2,7)
tu particion boot por lo que dices es hdc1 = (hd2,0)
lo que yo haría es arrancar con un live-cd montar la partición que tiene
tu /boot y tu /, copiar el menu.lst de ejemplo en su sitio y hacer un
update-grub
Eso deberia dejar grub como estaba

Uno de los motivos por los que todavia no esta grubconf en sarge es
porque es tan gracioso de estropear el menu.lst ¿no tendrás una copia de
seguridad de este archivo por casualidad?
