Hola: creo que el problema no esta en la configuracion de tu tarjeta de
video, si no el monitor. Los refrescos horizontal y vertical creo son
muy bajos, por lo que linux debe entender que tu monitor es viejo y no
soporta altas resoluciones. Igualmente te digo como instale mi driver de
una Geforce 4 TI 4800
Busque en apt-get.org repositorios que contengan los siguentes paquetes
nvidia-glx
nvidia-kernel-source
y tambien instale las kernel-headers correspondientes a mi version de
kernel
Luego de instalar las headers, vas a /usr/src y las descomprimes.
Vas al directorio donde tengas el driver y lo desepaquetas solamente.
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1.run --extract-only
Entras en el directorio de los drivers y compilas e instalas
# cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6111-pkg1
# make install SYSINCLUDE=/usr/src/kernel-headers-2.x.x/include
(include debe ir sin la "/" al final)
A mi me ha funcionado asi. Igualmente podrias probar con glxinfo, glxgears
antes de hacer todo esto para ver si en realidad la aceleracion 3d ya esta disponible
Respecto al config, proba a modificar los valores, no se si lo has
puesto a ojo maso menos o los has sacado de el manual de la portatil
