Gracias, pero la salida me da:
panoramix:~# grep es_ES /etc/* 2>/dev/null
/etc/environment:LC_ALL=es_ES
/etc/environment:LANG=es_ES.ISO-8859-1
/etc/environment:LANGUAGE=es_ES ## Para no cambiar el idioma, especialmente man
/etc/environment:#LANGUAGE=es_ES@euro ## Usar este si se quiere el man en castellano
/etc/environment:LC_TYPE=es_ES@euro
/etc/locale.alias:spanish es_ES.ISO-8859-1
/etc/locale.gen:es_ES ISO-8859-1
y no veo nada en especial...

Mira la salida de
$ grep es_ES /etc/* 2>/dev/null
a ver si encuentras alguna pista...
