Yo tengo las siguientes lineas en mi lilo.conf y arranco el menu grafico
sin ningun tipo de problema.

...................
# Activar menu grafico:
bitmap=/boot/sid.bmp
bmp-colors=1,,0,2,,0
bmp-table=120p,173p,1,15,17
bmp-timer=254p,432p,1,0,0 

# Installs the specified file as the new boot sector
# You have the choice between: bmp, compat, menu and text
# Look in /boot/ and in lilo.conf(5) manpage for details
#
# install=/boot/boot-menu.b
install=/boot/boot-bmp.b
.....................
