Efectivamente, en /usr/share/doc/xserver-xfree86/Status.gz en la parte de S3 
dice
            Only the ViRGE, Trio3D and Savage chipsets are supported in
            4.1.0.  All of the other chipsets are only supported in 3.3.6.

tu tarjeta necesita el paquete xserver-s3 (que es de la X 3.3.6)
