Me temo que no, de la página man de gateways: /etc/gateways is used by routed(8); the file contains a list of gateways which may not be located by using only information from the SIOGIFCONF ioctl(2) when routed(8) is started. Si no usas routed, no se usa gateways, según dice ahí. En /etc/network tienes directorios: if-donw.d if-up.d if-pre-up.d if-post-down.d Dentro de ellos puedes poner scripts que se ejecuten cuando ocurra alguna de esas cosas que indican... Si dentro del if-up.d pones un script con el route add, listo.
