Surely, your Ethernet card is Plug & Play... you should obtain a newer
kernel version (try 2.2.16, the latest stable), and compile Plug & Play
support in. Then compile the PCI NE2k support as a MODULE and append the
line "ne2k-pci" (without the quotes) to your /etc/modules, so it will load
at start-up.

It should work that way.

If it doesn't, try telling your BIOS to Initialize the PCI devices as well
as the ISA ones. (If it is a new computer the option must be there)
