geforce 8500gt lenny e compiz

Salve galera. Instalei uma GeForce 8500gt no meu desktop com debian  
lenny. Instalei os drivers e aparentemente tudo ok. Vejam os comandos  
abaixo:

saída do comando# glxgears
25043 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5008.485 FPS
25215 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5042.858 FPS
25200 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5039.953 FPS
23765 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4752.830 FPS

Só que quando ativo o compiz-fusion o mouse vai travando e de repente  
trava tudo, não consigo nem acessar um terminal.

Meu processador é um Sempron 3000+, mobo Asus K8v-VMUltra, 1GB ram.
