erro ao acessar init 1

Olá pessoal!

Estou com um problema no Lenny, sempre que tenta acessar o init 1 da a 
seguinte mensagem de erro:

Will now switch to single-user mode.
INIT: Going single user
INIT: sendind processes the THER signal
*error: 'single' exited outside the expected code flow.*
INIT: Sending processes the KILL signal
Give root password for maintenance
(or Type Control-D to continue):



Alguem ja passou por isso? sebe como resolver?
