Então, no meu README do kernel sources de no manual do Gentoo, eles 
falam pra fazer tao somente

# make && make modules_install
# cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage-2.6.9
# cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.9
