O LDAP pode ter várias funcionalidades. Sugiro a leitura dos HOWTO's
LDAP-HOWTO (http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LDAP-HOWTO/index.html) e
LDAP-Implementation-HOWTO
(http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LDAP-Implementation-HOWTO/index.html).
Em linux existe uma implementação open-source chamada OpenLDAP. Na
homepage (http://www.openldap.org) também se pode consultar
documentação sobre instalação e configuração de um servidor LDAP.
Em debian o pacote que contêm o servidor é o slapd.
