problemas com o Mplayer e conexão modem

Dois problemas persistentes
1) Instalei o Mplayer em casa, mas não consigo fazer rodar arquivos em
formato .avi, .mpeg, etc... O erro é grande, mas mesmo assim, to reportanto
pra ver se alguém pode me ajudar.

2) nunca conectei internet via modem, e o pessoal da lista tem me ajudado
muito, desde a instalação do modem, até o programa pra discar (coisa de
iniciante, apropósito, obrigado pela ajuda até agora!!). Bom, depois de tudo
isso tento conectar e ele disca na boa, mas na hora de estabelecer conexão
dá um erro no pppd. Vi hoje na lista uma resposta a respeito disso, mas o
pessoal disse para habilitar o ppp no kernel, mas o meu já tá habilitado.
alguém pode ajudar??
