Problemas ao iniciar o X

V se podem me dar uma mãozinha:
Estou usando o Woody com 2.4.18-bf2.4, Sis 620, 196 mb, X version 4.1
Ao tentar entar no modo grafico e logar o X, o sistema me exibi apenas uma tela negra e em seguida retorna para o modo texto com as seguintes mensagens: (uso o Kdm)
# Not starting GNOME Display Manager (gdm); it is not the default display manager
# Starting K Desktop Manager: done
# Not startintg X display manager (xdm); it is not the default display manager
Estando no modo texto, logo e executo o startx, ele retorna o seguinte:
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:

> Exiting
> Abandoning symbols file "default"
Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
No core pointer
Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices

Por não saber parar e iniciar o X na mão eu executo o reboot, ai ele funciona normalmente :/
Na instalação que realizei apenas usei os cd´s Woody
Alguem ja passou por isso antes? E pode me dar alguma dica?
