postgres - Ajuda a fazer isso funcionar... :)

Galera, to tentando fazer esse cara funcionar (postgres), para continuar com o ambiente de testes php, mas to tomando o
maior sacode...
Instalei o programa e alguns utilitarios tipo gtksql para rodar queries e tal... Mas nada!
Quando tento startar o psql ele diz:
user is not in pg_shadown, resumindo: Nao entendi nda! :) Jah tentei createuser lepow mas diz q o root não esta em
pg_shadown e coisa e tal... Mas eu tenho certeza absoluta q ele esta rodando e instaldo.. Soh nao quer funcionar...
O que quero fazer eh com q lepow possa inserir queries e brincar de php...
Mas alguém sabe como eu faco isso?
