obrigado pelo interesse em me ajudar na acentuacao na Debian Linux, mas eu fui testar a sua dica e digitei kbdconfig como root e nao vi nenhuma definicao de teclado brasil-abnt ou us-international. Abaixo tem a saida do comando:

Como voce pode ver nao ha' nem brasil-abnt nem us-international. Nao sei entao como proceder.
Quanto as aplicacoes XWindow acho bom seguirmos o exemplo da lista de espanhol e testarmos a libX11 modificada para acentos.
E' fundamental em um ambiente como o Linux que a acentuacao seja consertada.
