danke, das war´s. Der I/O Fehler tritt auf bei ~/.gvfs offenbar weil
nur der User selbst Leserecht hat, root aber nicht (wusste ehrlich
gesagt gar nicht, dass das geht ;). Den Fehler gibt rsync auch auf die
Konsole aus, das 

    IO error encountered -- skipping file deletion

sieht man dann allerdings erst im Logfile.
