pure-ftpd Problem

Hallo,

wir haben hier mit pure-ftpd Probleme, der Login failed.
OS ist Debian etch mit
uname -r
2.6.18-4-686 Kernel.
Installiert haben wir
apt-get install pure-ftpd pure-ftpd-common

pure-ftpd läuft als Super-Server (/etc/inetd.conf)
/etc/inetd.conf enthält diesen Eintrag:
ftp     stream  tcp     nowait  root    /usr/sbin/tcpd
/usr/sbin/pure-ftpd-wrapper

Beim Versuch einzuloggen meldet er dies:

# ftp meine-ip

Kann mir jemand auf die Sprünge helfen ?
