Der Debian-Kernel hat aber keine ext3-Unterstützung einkompiliert.

Fällt Dir der Unterschied auf? Für den Kernel 2.6.7-1-386 mußt Du
ebenfalls eine initrd benutzen, da der Kernel sonst nicht an die
Treiber kommt, um auf Deine Root-Partition zugreifen zu können.
