Exim als SMTP-AUTH client bei 1&1

Hallo,

ich bin kürzlich zu 1&1 gewechselt und bin damit sehr zufrieden.
Das einzige Problem, das ich im Moment habe ist das folgende:  1&1
nutzt für das Versenden von Mails SMTP-Athentication.  Das das
prinzipiell funktioniert, konnte ich mit Mozilla Thunderbird
verifizieren.  Da ich aber auch anders als mit Thunderbird mails
verschicken möchte, soll im Endeffekt Exim 4 den Mailtransport
übernehmen.  Um das zu konfigurieren, bin ich nach

     /usr/share/doc/exim4-base/README.SMTP-AUTH

vorgegangen und habe zunächst /etc/exim4/passwd.client editiert:

     auth.mail.onlinehome.de:<login>:<password>

und anschließend in
/etc/exim4/conf.d/transport/30_exim4-config_remote_smtp

     hosts_try_auth = DCsmarthost

Auch    /etc/init.d/exim4 restart    habe ich nicht vergessen.

Das entspricht soweit der prefs.js von Thunderbird:

user_pref("mail.smtp.defaultserver", "smtp1");
user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.auth_method", 1);
user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.hostname", "auth.mail.onlinehome.de");
user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.port", 25);
user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.try_ssl", 1);
user_pref("mail.smtpserver.smtp1.username", "<login>");

- ich hoffe jedenfalls, daß try_ssl = 1 der Exim-Einstellung entspricht.
Wenn ich nun per

     mailx -s "Testmail" tillea@rki.de < /dev/null

eine Mail abschicke, bekomme ich folgendes zurück:

Hat jemand eine Idee, was hier falsch läuft?  Ich hab's auch noch
mal mit Pine versucht, die entsprechenden SMTP-AUTH - Einstellungen
vorzunehmen, doch leider auch erfolglos.
