also, wenn ich das richtig verstehe solltest du damit weiterkommen:
1) XFree86 -configure Kann einige Zeit dauern. Meldung beachten.
2) Die so entstandene XF86Config.new so wie gemeldet testen.
Grauen X-Server-Bildschirm mit [Strg]+[Alt]+[<-] killen. Bei Problemen mit 
der Maus: Von Hand die XF86Config.new ändern. oder gleich mit 3) weitermachen.
3) Dann die XF86Config.new in XF86Config-4 umbenennen und nach 
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 kopieren.
4) xf86cfg -textmode -configure /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 erledigt dann den Rest
- Card Driver = vesa für nicht unterstützte Grafikkarten.
- ab XFree4.2: xf86cfg -textmode -xf86config /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
aber XFree4.2 hast du bei woody normal nicht.
