Evtl. das hier?
$ man xsetroot
       [...]
       -fg color
              Use `color'' as the foreground color.   Foreground
              and background colors are meaningful only in combi­
              nation with -cursor, -bitmap, or -mod.

       -solid color
              This sets the background of the root window to  the
              specified  color.   This  option  is only useful on
              color servers.

Viele Windowmanager können das 'root window' mittels eigener
Hilfsprogramme (icewmbg, bsetroot) selbst verwalten.
