X ne démarre plus

Salut liste,
cette nuit, après une mise à jour et une compilation de kernel, reboot
et impossible de démarrer le server X; retour au kernel Debian
(2.6.18-4-686) et reboot: pareil!
J'ai fait un dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, mais rien de plus.
Par contre, le server VESA fonctionne correctement.
Je ne vois pas ce qui pourrait bloquer!?
