Pbm installation postgresql

Je ne suis pas sur d'avoir bien transmis ce message a la liste... alors, je le

Bonjour a tous,

apres l'installation de postgresql, voici l'erreur que je
rencontre quand j'essaie de lancer /etc/init.d/postgresql restart :

Starting PostgreSQL database server: postmaster(FAILED)
ERROR: Removing stale PID file and socket
pg_controldata: ne peut lire le fichier
"/var/lib/postgres/data/global/pg_control": Aucun fichier ou répertoire de ce
type
ERROR: PostgreSQL postmaster did not start because of an unknown reason.
PostgreSQL's init script (/etc/init.d/postgresql) attempted
to start the postmaster, however, this failed because of an unknown
reason.

Pourtant, le fichier /var/lib/postgres/data/global/pg_control existe bien et a
les droits suffisants pour que postgresql puisse y acceder...
