[Debian] Tex-Fonts installieren (PS)

Kann mir zufällig jemand helfen - ich versuche
seit ca. 1 Woche (!) erfolglos einige PS-Fonts unter
teTeX zu installieren - ohne irgend einen sichtbaren
Fortschritt. 

Es handelt sich um einige Bitstreamfonts
Heraus kommt bei mir bestenfalls, dass die
Schrift in xdvi erkennbar ist, aber ohne Umlaute
space-Zeichen, Zeilenabstand stimmt nicht usw.

Aus   "Das große Übel mit den Tex Fonts" 
wird  "DasgroebelmitdenTexFonts"

Buchstabenzuordnung

Ich habe den Bitstream-Charter afm File mit
dem afm File der neuen Fonts verglichen und
beide passen bei der Zuordnung zusammen, 
also C 32 ist bei beiden <space> (Beispiel)

C 38 ; WX 704 ; N ampersand ; B 53 -12 683 683 ; 
C 38 ; WX 822 ; N ampersand ; B 74 -8 853 702 ;

germandbls sitzt bei beiden auf 251 usw.

(nur der Euro ist neu dabei)
C -1 ; WX 495 ; N Euro ; B 4 -14 484 700 ;

Ich habe das ganze mit fontinst versucht
als auch mit afm2tfm 
jeweils entsprechend den Anweisungen nach
den texdoc (fontinst und dvips)
also z.B.:

afm und pfb Files umbenannt nach K. Berry
(bgor8a.afm, bgor8a.pfb)

tex
^^^
fontinst \latinfamily{bgo}{}\bye
vptovf
pltotf

die tfm, vf, pfb, und fd files in die entsprechenden
directories verschoben
mktexlsr

dvips
^^^^
bgo.map geschrieben
config.bgo geschrieben
updmap ausgeführt
mktexlsr

und es kommt nur unbrauchbarer Schrott raus :-(

Beim Durchlauf von fontinst kommt als bemerkenswerte
Warnung nur 

Warning: missing glyph `euro'.  

raus, was wohl damit zusammenhängt, dass das "EUR" Zeichen
im afm-File "Euro" lautet und nicht "euro".
außerdem fehlen natürlich noch viele
andere Sonderzeichnen 
(zahlen-oldstyle, divorced, dollaroldstyle, blank, copyleft usw.)
die aber tatsächlich nicht vorhanden sind.

Ansonsten kommen eigenlich nur erfolgsmeldungen:

Wenn ich das ganze mit afm2tfm entsprechend 
dvips-Anweisungen durchführe, kann ich 
das Ergebnis nicht einmal anschauen:,
Latex läuft ohne Fehlermeldungen mit
dem Font durch, xdvi verabschiedet sich
aber mit "Speicherzugriffsfehler"
