[Debian]: Warum kaputte Partitionstabelle (und wie reparieren)?

Hallo ihr sieben (und mehr) Weisen!

Ich habe gerade versucht, einem PIII/450 auf
einer alte Quantum Bigfoot 2550A (primary slave)
slink zu installieren.

Diese Platte hat die CHS-Konfiguration 4994/16/63, und abgesehen
davon, daß cfdisk ohne manuelle Eingabe 7xx/255/63 feststellte,
lief die Installation des Basis-Systems ok.

Nur bootbar machen wollte er das ganze nicht (boot von Diskette
funktioniert tadellos):

  # lilo

Dann wollte ich mit cfdisk die Partitionstabelle neu schreiben,
doch es beklagte sich über ein missglücktes re-read.

Woran könnte das liegen?
Falls folgende Info's mir helfen helfen können - ich hänge sie
