Linux 2.2.x virtual filesystem?

In the 2.0.x series of kernels there is a 2Gb size limit
on a single file. The reason was a limitation in the virtual
filesystem (VFS) in the kernel.

Is that limitation just history with the new 2.2.x series of
kernels or is it still there?
