Sorry to jump in late. I have the same card which refused to work with 
kernel (compiled by me). All the above options were enabled and
dhcp-client never worked. Then, I installed the dhcpcd from slink and
everything worked smmothly. 

Try installing dhcpcd from slink/sarge and check whether you can
connect.
