I have my 8500 running with 3D. I'm using the XFree CVS from the DRI
project, but I don't really use 3D acceleration, so I can't tell you
how well it's working. From what I hear on the maillist, it seems to
run stuff like Quake3, UT (not UT2003! But from what you hear, that's a
no-go with ATI drivers too because of patent issues) and RTCW fairly
well. I didn't have too much luck with the ATI drivers because they're
incompatible with my X11 installation.

AMD 760 here, using the "AMD Irongate, 761 and 762 support"
(CONFIG_AGP_AMD). No problems. I don't know if this is compiled into
any stock kernel, though.

$ dmesg |grep agp
Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 439M
agpgart: Detected AMD 761 chipset
agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xd0000000
