See if there is a symbolic link in /etc/rcS.d/ to /etc/init.d/isapnp.
Also, for testing you might try doing /sbin/isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf to
see if it helps. Or try 2.4.2 kernel which automatically configures
your sound card.
