Generally JPEG good for gradient images. For example photos. This is
becaouse of JPEG's image compression algorithms.
GIF is better suited for images which have small details, sharp edges
between areas. This is why it usually better to use GIF instead JPEG
for web graphics. Web graphics usally doesn't contain gradient and
contains a lot of small details, letter, etc. PNG is quite simular to
GIF so it also good for web graphics. This format contains number of
improvements like support for 24 color and some others I don't remeber
now. Also it is free while GIF is not. So PNG is good for web graphics
too. The only problem with PNG I know is that Netscape 4.xx doesn't
support transparent PNG's. Also I'm not sure if PNG supports
animation.
