Hi,,

why not use xf86config to set up everything you'll probably see your trackball listed ...

also take a look at http://www.xfree86.org

regards,

J.L.

Joris, been there done that and thanks for the response.

 I have run xf86config 3 times and done some manual mods to the Pointer section.  I have been around all the documentation is the system and am going to redefine the problem.

As presently configured the startx strartup file does not complain about the mouse even though there is no curser with the first screen comes up.  Here is the tail of the startx startup file.
`/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/xkbcomp -w 1 -R/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb -xkm -m us_microsoft -em1 "The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:" -emp "> " -eml "Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server" keymap/xfree86 /var/tmp/xfree86.xkm'

xinit:  connection to X server lost.

waiting for X server to shut down
----------------------------------  end of startx startup   ------------------------
As noted below I have some files that are pointed to but do not exist.
variable=$HOME/.xinitrc  <= not present in HOME
variable=$HOME/.serverrc <= not present in HOME
The file xserverrc does not exist?

Might I suggest you simplify the problem? Rename your current /etc/X11/XF86Config[-4] file for backup purposes. Borrow a plain serial or PS/2 mouse and replace the trackball with it temporarily (or use no mouse and a keyboard-friendly wm like icewm). Rerun XF86Setup or xf86config or dexter or anXious (whichever works the best). Install icewm or something simpler like that and set it as your default window manager. Now does X run? If not, it's not a trackball issue. If so, replace the mouse with the trackball and try again and let us know the results.

Also, you might try getting your trackball to work in a text console with gpm (run gpmconfig). Also, if you already have gpm running and working with your trackball, you might need to point X to /dev/gpmdata instead of /dev/[mouse|psaux].

It seems to me from the logs below that since "All modeline options [are] deleted", you have a video problem instead of a trackball problem. But then, I'm no expert.

Subject: Moron X not working

Thanks to Mark and Mike for your response I have tried to respond and rewrite my problems.  Thanks gents.  John                               hammack@ridgenet.net

After initiating "startx" a window comes up with a menu.  I am not sure this is an X window or the window manager.  But the mouse cursor is not present and the mouse buttons are not effective.  At this point I don't think the screen is frozen because initially "enlightenment" scrawls in the center of the screen.  The mouse is a kensington track ball.  If necessay I would get another pointing device.  But it was working under an OLD ver of Slackware.  It works under windows as a PS/2.
I captured the startx log it is attached.  Note that xinit reports, "connection to X server lost."
This may terminated X and therefor the mouse never gets a chance to work.
Just prior to that report the following is also reported:
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports: " emp " > " -eml "
Errors from xkb comp are not fatal to the X server.

XF86Config originally generated Device as "/dev/mouse"
I changed it to, Device   "/dev/psaux."  It still doesn't work.

See below:
1.  startx startup log.
2.  SuperProbe log
3.  Other notes

Hardware:  PII 266 mhz 64MB, 2MB on Diamond, kensington TB (PS/2)
OS: Linux 2.2.17 pre10 i686 [ELF]
X manager = enlightenment
Problem:  startx results with screen and no cursor.
- Blue/green screen appears with menu and a few horizontal lines.
- "enlightenment" scrawls and dissappeears.
- no cursor is present
- ctrl-alt-BS exits the window.

Some output of startx  expaned version below

Configured Drivers: SVGA  (the S3_VIRGE/VX driver did not work)
mouse: type PS/2, device /dev/psaux, button 3.
SVGA:  Graphics device ID:  Diamond
SVGA:  Monitor ID:  Fairview
SVGA:  PCI: S3 ViRGE/VX
SVGA:  Detected S3 ViRGE/VX
SVGA:  using driver for chipset "s3_virge"
.....
Other questions from startx as follows:
startx has following lines:
variable=$HOME/.xinitrc  <= not present in HOME
variable=$HOME/.serverrc <= not present in HOME
variable=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc
variable=""""""""""""""""""""""""/xserverrc
 But the following is true
    xinitrc -> /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc  (xinitrc is
                                        there)
    xserverrc -> /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc  (no file)
    A find on *xserverrc* list it only at the dir
above listed in startx.

Any help is greatly appreciated.   Hammack@ridgenet.net
